Does your dog hate your partner?

It is a very bad situation to be in: Your dog dislikes your new partner. Or at least it seems to be the case! He barks at him all the time, even bites him. This behaviour is not acceptable. Not amon humans, and not in human-pet relationships. That is the reason why you should think about the possible causes for your dogs agressive behaviour.

The first question your should ask yourself is, if he hates every male. It is very common for traumatized dogs to hate males because they were severely mistreated, even abused by males in the past. So if your dog is from an animal shelter, or an animal rescue organisation, this could be the case. It is very hard to deal with such a pet, but not impossible with the help of experienced dog training specialist.

A more likely cause could be the status of your new partner in the social hirarchy. Dogs live in packs and they do have alpha dogs who lead. You have established yourself as the pack leader so your dog behaves and follows your orders. But a new person in the household needs to prove himself first. So what can you do? The first thing is to advice him, to look out for his body language. It should signal strength at all times. He should treat the dog with consequence and should not let the pet dominate him in any way. This quickly solves the hirarchy problem..

It might show, that it wasn't your pet „hating“ your partner, but dominating him. Not a good situation to be in, but solvable. I wish you all the best, because i know, that such problems can seriously damage a new relationship. But this should not stop you. A dog is a variable to look out for, but that is all.
